The Nambucca Leagues and Sports Club has been “completely destroyed” by fire.
The roof collapsed allowing fire to expand rapidly.
A bit before 6am this morning, Fire and Rescue NSW received calls the Nambucca Leagues and Sports Club was on fire. Firefighters worked to control the blaze, however the building sustained a roof collapse leading the fire to expand rapidly.
The Mid North Coaster spoke to Inspector Tony Lenthall, Duty Commander for Mid North Coast, on the scene at 10.30am.
Inspector Lenthall told the Mid North Coaster local Fire and Rescue crew responded to an alarm operating call just before 6am this morning.
On route to the club, firefighter saw a huge plume of black smoke. “When they arrived the building was well alight with smoke issuing from all parts of the roof,” Inspector Lenthall said.
“When the crews withdrew, they continued firefighting efforts with master streams - an aerial truck at work along with two big hose lines.”
“Unfortunately the building has been totally destroyed.
A total of six Fire and Rescue engines were on the scene , along with specialist aerial truck from Coffs Harbour and two specialised hazmat vehicles from Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour. Commissioner Fewtrill was also present, he was travelling past from Sydney.
“Fire and Rescue crews worked extremely hard under very warm conditions to try and save the building while wearing specialised air tanks, but due to the structural collapse of the building it could not be saved,” said Inspector Lenthall.
Police, ambulance and RFS also attended to assist along with the local mayor of Nambucca Shire Garry Lee.
The scene has been handed back over to the police.
